FlächenCHECK: The path from property sites to the FlächenTOOL

For the transition to electric mobility to succeed, a comprehensive, needs-based and user-friendly charging infrastructure is required. The charging infrastructure, in turn, requires land on which it can be built. Municipalities and federal states play a pivotal role in providing suitable sites, as they often have suitable properties. By providing these areas, they support the expansion of the charging infrastructure in Germany and help electric mobility as a whole to succeed.

With this in mind, the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure has developed a checklist and test criteria with the support of members of the Advisory Board. This is intended to help those working in local authorities and the federal states to:

1.Identify existing property sites
2. Assess their suitability
3. Publish them in the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure’s site tool (FlächenTOOL)
4. Create the necessary coordination structures within the relevant administration

The so-called FlächenCHECK (site check) is now available at www.flaechentool.de. The FlächenTOOL is a digital matching platform on which sites available for the installation of charging infrastructure can be entered and found by investors. The FlächenTOOL now lists more than 2,000 sites that are available in Germany for the installation of charging infrastructure. The digital platform was launched in November 2020 with the aim of making spaces available to all market participants without discrimination.
