On a visit to the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure in Berlin today, Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister of Digital and Transport, received a first-hand account of the progress being made in expanding the charging infrastructure in Germany.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV – Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr) and under the umbrella of the federally owned NOW GmbH, the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure supports and accompanies the planning and measures for the expansion of the charging infrastructure as a central hub between the relevant stakeholders.

Federal Minister Wissing exchanged views on current developments and challenges in the expansion of charging infrastructure with NOW Managing Director Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff and the management of the Centre, Johannes Pallasch and Dagmar Fehler. The meeting focused on providing an insight into the work and current projects of the Centre for Charging Infrastructure, along with its competencies and objectives. Other topics that were addressed included the new edition of the Charging Infrastructure Master Plan, the implementation of the Deutschlandnetz, the development of e-truck charging infrastructure, and the potential of bidirectional charging. The team at the Centre for Charging Infrastructure also presented the digital tools used to plan and manage the expansion of the charging infrastructure to the Minister: The StandortTOOL location toll for planning the demand for charging infrastructure expansion, the OBELIS platform or data collection and analysis of charging processes at BMDV-funded charging points, and the FlächenTOOL site tool, which brings together owners of potential infrastructure sites and investors in a digital format.

Federal Minister Wissing was accompanied on his visit by Daniela Kluckert, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Digital and Transport and Commissioner for Charging Column Infrastructure, as well as Prof. Dr. Klaus Bonhoff, Director General for Policy Issues at the BMDV and Chairman of the Centre for Charging Infrastructure Advisory Board.

Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister of Digital and Transport: “We are striving for a nationwide and user-friendly charging infrastructure. With the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure, I am pleased that we can rely on a centre of expertise that will support us in achieving this objective. The rapid development of the charging infrastructure is being driven forward at the Centre with great competence in the areas of demand planning, technology, data and the legal framework – not only strategically, but also in practical terms. The Centre for Charging Infrastructure makes clean mobility a reality.”

Johannes Pallasch, Management Team Spokesman for the Centre for Charging Infrastructure: “We are delighted that Transport Minister Wissing has visited our Centre for Charging Infrastructure, as it underscores the high priority that the federal government attaches to the expansion of charging infrastructure. The Centre is rapidly driving the expansion of charging infrastructure in Germany forward on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport. Today was a great opportunity to demonstrate to Federal Minister Wissing on the ground how we are shaping the future of mobility with the data we collect and our digital tools.”
