The truck charging network in Germany
We are organizing the development of a fast-charging network for trucks along Germany's freeways.
In future, e-trucks will be able to charge electricity anywhere on German highways.
The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV), supported by Autobahn GmbH des Bundes and the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure, has drawn up a concept for a nationwide truck charging network along the federal freeways in Germany, with which the BMV is also to fulfil its guarantee obligation to provide infrastructure in accordance with the Fast Charging Act.
Based on current plans, a truck fast-charging network comprising 351 locations along the federal highways is planned, of which 227 will be at staffed rest areas and 124 at unstaffed rest areas. Overall, the goal is to install and operate approximately 1,800 MCS charging points and approximately 2,400 CCS charging points at these locations.
The first call for bids for the truck fast-charging network at unstaffed rest areas along the federal highways has been completed. The contracts for the planning, construction, and operation of the fast-charging infrastructure at 124 unstaffed rest stops were awarded on June 30, 2026, by Autobahn GmbH, a federal agency.
Strategic importance for Germany and Europe
The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure sees the expansion of charging infrastructure as key to the transformation of the transport sector. It networks politics, business and science, coordinates funding programs and analyses data on infrastructure requirements.
The development of a nationwide charging network for heavy goods vehicles is part of a comprehensive mobility and energy policy. This will create an integrated system for climate-friendly heavy goods transport that will strengthen Germany as a logistics location in the long term.
The truck charging network
With around 350 locations along the federal highways, a nationwide fast-charging network is being created that will decisively support the ramp-up of electric heavy goods traffic.
Over 350 high-performance charging stations along the federal highways
As things stand, 351 locations are planned along the federal highways. High-performance charging stations designed specifically to meet the needs of electric trucks are being built at these sites.
The operators of the future truck fast-charging stations at 124 unstaffed rest areas along the federal highways have been selected.
On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV), the Federal Motorway Corporation (Autobahn GmbH) awarded contracts at the end of June 2026 for the planning, construction, and operation of truck fast-charging infrastructure in five lots. Each lot comprises approximately 25 larger and smaller sites at unstaffed rest areas. The structure of the lots ensures a balanced distribution of the truck fast-charging infrastructure throughout Germany.
The following companies were awarded the contract:
- Lot 1 (25 rest stops): eliso Voltix Truck Charging GmbH
- Lot 2 (24 rest stops): autostrom.plus GmbH
- Section 3 (26 rest stops): Electric Mobility Infrastructure Germany GmbH
- Lot 4 (25 rest stops): STRA-loaded Consortium
- Lot 5 (24 rest stops): E.ON Drive & mblty Joint Bidder Consortium
A total of [number] are being built at the sites 836 charging stations for road freight transport with:
- 447 MCS charging points and
- 389 CCS charging stations
High-performance charging clusters are being created at large service areas - with restaurants, services and short distances for breaks.
The further expansion and operation of truck charging infrastructure at most of the managed rest stops is to be put out to bid through competitive procurement processes.
Implementation and coordination
The Federal Ministry of Transport is developing the truck charging network together with Autobahn GmbH and the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure. The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure is responsible for strategic management, location analysis and monitoring the tenders.
The first call for bids for the planning, construction, and operation of charging infrastructure at 124 unstaffed rest areas was completed at the end of June 2026. Additional bidding processes will follow in stages to create a nationwide network.
The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure uses data-based tools and location analyses to assess demand, capacity utilisation and regional differences. Among other things, traffic volumes, logistics corridors and the requirements of freight forwarders and infrastructure operators are taken into account.
Continuous monitoring enables transparent tracking of the expansion and precise planning of further requirements as well as needs-based adjustment of the expansion.
Significance for logistics and the economy
For haulage companies and industry, the truck charging network creates planning security when switching to e-trucks. It reduces range anxiety and enables new, climate-friendly logistics concepts.
At the same time, the expansion strengthens the innovative power of the German economy. Funding programs and pilot projects accompany the market launch of new technologies in order to quickly put climate-neutral mobility into practice.
