National charging infrastructure control center goes into operation

Andreas Scheuer, Federal Minister of Transportation and Digital Infrastructure, today launched the operational phase of the National Charging Infrastructure Control Center together with Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff, Managing Director (Spokesperson) of NOW GmbH. On site, Johannes Pallasch and Dagmar Fehler (heads of the control center) provided an update on the status of implementation and presented the Federal Minister with the control center’s first publication, the position paper titled „Einfach laden“ (Simple Charging).

The objectives of the control center include

  • The establishment of a public fast-charging network with 1,000 locations by the end of 2023. The network is intended to support charging during longer trips and in everyday urban driving.
  • The installation of 50,000 publicly accessible fast- and standard-charging stations by the end of 2021.
  • Accelerating the development of private charging infrastructure through financial incentives and an improved regulatory framework.
  • A user-friendly public charging infrastructure with charging stations that are easy to find, operate reliably, and provide transparent billing for charging using common payment methods.

 

In November 2019, the federal government agreed on these goals and the establishment of a National Charging Infrastructure Coordination Center as part of the „Charging Infrastructure Master Plan.“ The Coordination Center will serve as the central point of contact for the federal government and all ministries on matters related to charging infrastructure.

Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff, Managing Director (Spokesperson) of NOW GmbH: „The federal government has committed to reducing total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany by 55 to 56 % by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this, road traffic must be „electrified“ quickly. The latest registration figures for electric passenger cars show that citizens are ready for this. What’s still missing is a good charging infrastructure. That’s what we’re working toward. Under the umbrella of the federally owned NOW GmbH, the National Charging Infrastructure Coordination Center is driving forward its rapid expansion.“

Johannes Pallasch, Director of the National Charging Infrastructure Coordination Center: „Just charge. That’s what we’re working on. We coordinate and manage activities to expand the charging infrastructure in Germany. We provide support for planning and implementation and promote the development of charging infrastructure. To better understand the demand for charging stations, we collect relevant data. We connect key stakeholders—such as charging infrastructure operators, automakers, state governments, and local authorities—and share our expertise. We always keep users in mind. Their satisfaction is what drives us.“
