Truck Fast-Charging Network: The Market Can Play a Role in the Tender Preparation Process

The National Charging Infrastructure Coordination Center, the Federal Government’s Autobahn GmbH, and the Federal Ministry of Transport are currently preparing the procurement process for the planning, construction, and operation of charging infrastructure for heavy-duty commercial vehicles at an estimated 230 managed rest areas along the federal highways. Interested market participants are now invited to contribute their experiences, assessments, and specific plans to the further development of the project through an online survey.

The goal is to take existing plans and the practical expertise of market participants into account at an early stage. The feedback is intended to help ensure that the proposed award process is tailored to needs and practical requirements. Companies may also provide details about their own specific projects and plans for establishing truck fast-charging infrastructure, to the extent that these are relevant to the planned initiative.

Johannes Pallasch, spokesperson and director of the National Charging Infrastructure Coordination Center:
„The truck fast-charging network continues to take shape: As we prepare for the procurement process, we are heading toward the next important milestone. We are in the midst of the market ramp-up. This makes it all the more important for market participants to now constructively contribute their experiences and concrete plans. After all, only by working together can we create a charging network that meets demand and is practical.“

A high-performance charging network for heavy-duty electric vehicles
The planned charging infrastructure at staffed rest areas is part of the truck fast-charging network along the federal highways. A total of approximately 4,200 charging points are planned at about 350 managed and unmanaged rest areas. These are intended to enable both quick charging during legally required rest breaks and overnight charging. The network is intended to create a high-performance, demand-driven charging infrastructure for battery-electric heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Particular emphasis is placed on the requirements of electric heavy-duty long-haul transport.

Project Overview
The project overview provides an overview of the planned project and the key parameters of the proposed procurement process. It thus serves as a basis for participants in the online survey.

You can view the project overview here View and download.
You can find a list of tentative locations here.

As part of the survey, you also have the opportunity to submit your own specific plans for the construction of truck fast-charging infrastructure—which could be relevant to the specific design of the project—and to provide further information on this topic.

The feedback received will then be evaluated and taken into account in the further preparation of the procurement process.
