AFIR-ZielMONITORING Makes EU Charging Targets Transparent

The National Charging Infrastructure Coordination Center is releasing the new „AFIR-ZielMONITORING“ dashboard today. This digital monitoring tool tracks the progress of implementing the European AFIR requirements for public charging infrastructure for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Germany. It allows the various AFIR targets to be displayed in a differentiated manner by target type, target year, and implementation status, and analyzed on a map of Germany showing the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

With the European Regulation on the Deployment of Alternative Fuels Infrastructure (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation, AFIR), the European Union has established binding deployment targets for public charging infrastructure along major transportation corridors. For the charging infrastructure for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, the regulation defines, among other things, requirements regarding the maximum distances between charging stations on the TEN-T core network and the TEN-T comprehensive network.

The new AFIR-ZielMONITORING dashboard from the National Charging Infrastructure Coordination Center provides a transparent and clear overview of the current status of target achievement. Users can filter the distance-based AFIR targets by target type, target year, and status. Users can choose between the target types „Core Network“ and „Total Network,“ the target years 2027, 2030, and 2035, and view charging infrastructure that is „in operation“ or „in operation & in planning.“.

An interactive map of Germany displays the sections of the TEN-T core and overall networks that already meet the respective targets or still require expansion. In addition, the dashboard shows the respective degree of compliance as a percentage. At a glance, it’s clear: 92 percent of the 2027 target has already been achieved. This highlights the contribution that existing and planned charging infrastructure locations are making toward achieving the European expansion targets.

Johannes Pallasch, Head and Spokesman of the National Charging Infrastructure Control Center under the umbrella of NOW GmbH: „With the AFIR-ZielMONITORING, we are providing transparency regarding progress in expanding the public fast-charging infrastructure along European transportation corridors in Germany. The application clearly illustrates how far we have already come in Germany toward meeting the AFIR targets and where further expansion is still needed. The dashboard thus provides an important data foundation for policymakers, the business community, and all stakeholders working to advance the development of a needs-based and sustainable charging infrastructure.“

In addition to the distance-based targets along the TEN-T network, the dashboard also shows the progress toward achieving the so-called fleet-based AFIR target. This target calls for the development of public charging capacity based on the number of registered passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
