500 million euros for charging infrastructure in apartment buildings

The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) is now supporting the installation of charging infrastructure in and around apartment buildings with a new funding program. The BMV is thus focusing specifically on existing buildings in order to facilitate access to charging infrastructure at the approximately 9 million off-street parking spaces. Funding is provided for the purchase and installation of private charging infrastructure, e.g. wall boxes in conjunction with the corresponding technical equipment. The grid connection or necessary construction measures are also eligible for funding. The calls for funding are published today, applications are possible from April 15, 2026.

Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder: „The switch to e-cars often fails not because of a lack of will, but because of a lack of charging facilities at home. In Germany in particular, the majority of people live in apartment buildings - but the associated parking spaces have so far been inadequately equipped with charging infrastructure. We are now changing this with our funding of 500 million euros. We are making investments in private charging facilities much more attractive and bringing the infrastructure to where it is needed. Because electromobility will only succeed if it is suitable for everyday use.“

Key points of the funding at a glance

The funding program is divided into three simultaneous funding calls for different eligible applicants:

1) Condominium owners' associations (WEG),

2) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and private owners of residential property for renting and

3) Housing associations and real estate companies with a large housing stock.

A total funding volume of up to 500 million euros is available. The charging capacity per charging point may not exceed 22 kW. Interested parties can submit their application for funding from April 15, 2026.

Applications for the first two recipient groups are processed as soon as they are received. If the application is approved, funding will be granted in the form of a fixed amount. Applications can be submitted until November 10, 2026.

Funding for companies with a large housing stock is awarded on the basis of a competitive procedure. Applications can be submitted until October 15, 2026. Approval will be granted once the competitive procedure has been completed.

The new funding program focuses on the electrification of a larger building stock. One condition for receiving funding is that at least 20 percent of the existing parking spaces in an apartment building must be pre-wired. In addition, at least six parking spaces in or on an apartment building must always be electrified.

The funding amount per parking space to be electrified is:

• maximum 1,300 euros without wallbox installed,
• maximum 1,500 euros with wallbox or
• a maximum of 2,000 euros with a charging point that supports bidirectional charging.

The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure, which has been planning and supporting activities to expand the charging infrastructure in Germany on behalf of the BMV and under the umbrella of the federally owned NOW GmbH since 2020, is responsible for the content of the new funding program.

The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure is providing technical and organizational support for the funding programme - from development to practical implementation.„

The new funding program implements measure 3 („Charging infrastructure in multi-party buildings“) of the „Charging Infrastructure Master Plan 2030“, which was adopted by the Federal Cabinet in November 2025. With financial support from the BMV, the measure is intended to increase the willingness of owners and owners' associations to invest and accelerate the development of charging facilities.

Applications are submitted via the project management organization PricewaterhouseCoopers GmbH Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft. The project management organization provides a digital application portal for the entire process, which also provides a wealth of information and assistance in addition to the actual application.
